Canadian Officials Warn People To Not Let Moose Lick Their Cars

Though the sign itself may seem funny, and it is, there's a serious reason behind why officials in Canada put it up. Salt it a snack that moose absolutely love, and apparently, they have realized that they can get it off our cars.

"They're obsessed with salt, it's one of the things they need for the minerals in their body," a spokesman from Jasper National Park in Canada, Steve Young, told CNN. "They usually get it from salt lakes in the park, but now they realized they can also get road salt that splashes onto cars."

CNN reports that at the Jasper National Park, people often park their cars on the side of the road, hoping to get a look at the moose, but that actually letting the moose near the cars is very dangerous. If you allow moose to lick salt of your car, you run the risk of them becoming habituated with being around cars, and that's risky not only for the moose but for the drivers too.

"Moose and cars are not a good mix. If you hit the moose with your car, you take the legs out from under it and it's going through your windshield," Young explained, adding that it is simply best to drive away when you see a moose approaching you. He also stressed that it's important to stay in your car and not interact with the wildlife, especially the moose, who will charge you if they feel threatened.

"We've been seeing a lot more moose lately. The wolf population is decreasing, which means there's fewer predators and the moose population is going up as a result," Young said. "This also means people need to be respectful and give them space."

And though the wolf population in Canada is decreasing, you can read about 2 new gliders discovered in Australia and and watch an endangered black rhino being born in England.

Horse Rescued From Icy Mud Hole, Recovering Well

On Monday, Fysik, an 11-year-old retired jumping horse, sunk and got stuck up to his neck in a hole of freezing muddy water. "He was shivering and I just knew when I saw him that there was no way I was going to be able to get him out of that myself," his owner, the operator of Adorado Nino Horse Rescue and Sanctuary near Leduc, Alta, Tracy Benkendorf, told CBC news

Knowing that she couldn't do it alone, she called 911 and posted a picture of the horse on Facebook, asking if anyone knows what to do to help it. "I'm just absolutely beyond grateful for these people that came together in such an incredible, amazing way," she says about the firefighters, the RCMP, her neighbors, her veterinarian and some other people she didn't even know who arrived to help.

Stray Cat Brings Her Kittens To Their Human Savior

Earlier in the summer, a fluffy cat appeared in Lisianne's garden in Canada. It looked lonely and hungry, so Lisianne put out some water and food for it. That was the start of the most wholesome friendship. Becoming fond of the cat, Lisianne named her Usagi, and continued caring for Usagi every day when she showed up in her garden. After a while, the kitty started getting bigger, but not from food. It was because she was pregnant.

As reported by Unilad, a Facebook post by a local rescue group, Chatons Orphelins Montréal, wrote: "This lady with a big heart for this cause was watching her, she put food and water in order to help her… a routine has settled between this kitty and her good fairy. With this routine, the lady gained her confidence and the kitty started getting closer."

Usagi, after giving birth outside, continued coming back to eat at Lisianne's, and soon, the gorgeous black cat brought her tiny kittens to Lisianne's porch, one by one, setting up a nest near the woman's house where she and her babies will be safe. Lisianne, being an absolute angel, decided to help the kittens further, getting them a room in with the local rescue group, and saving their lives.

Lisianne decided to keep Usagi, a friend of hers adopted one of the babies, while the other five kittens stay at Chatons Orphelins Montréal and get treated, because it turns out that all five of the kittens had "breathing issues and conjunctivitis." They were treated for their issues are are now better, all thanks to the help of this one person who saved their lives.

Puppy Born With Green Fur Named Pistachio

Approximately, two weeks ago at a farm on the Mediterranean island of Sardinia, Italy, an Italian sheep farmer named Cristian Mallocci noticed that one of his 8 dogs, Spelacchia, gave birth to a litter of 5 puppies, one of which was born with green fur.

All the other pups in the litter had white fur, just like their mother. Not pistachio. However, while the phenomenon is rare, there is an explanation behind it. You know when you get a bruise and it turns green? Well, that substance is known as biliverdin. It is assumed that when puppies with pale fur have contact with that green pigment, biliverdin, within their mother's womb, then they'll take on a green tint.

Two New Fluffy Marsupial Gliders Discovered In Australia

Somehow, Australia managed to get yet another adorable creature. Actually, 2 of them!

Up until last week, it was assumed that there was only one species of the great glider - a possum-sized marsupial. But, as the
Sydney Morning Herald reports, "there are actually three species of greater glider, not one," explaining that the marsupials are "squeezing into tree hollows during the day and at night soaring up to 100 metres through the air on the hunt for its favourite eucalyptus leaves." And yes, Australia did indeed just get cuter.

Kitten Nursery Doing Incredible Work But Is In Need Of Volunteers

In New Jersey, when coronavirus cases were high and most of the state was sheltering at home, a little one-room NICU Kitten Nursery that has saved hundreds of little kittens had to close its doors.

nj.com reports that, since "[t]he space was too small to safely social distance," a veterinary technician with St. Hubert's Animal Welfare Center named Friedman who was also the manager of the nursery and a vet tech called Nick Eckert "took the animals into their own homes to care for them." Dozens of kittens, many of them badly injured and desperately in need of help.

"It was very depressing that when we should have been celebrating our one-year anniversary, we were moving our nursery into our homes," said Friedman. "I was terrified that we would lose the program because of COVID-19. And I knew that because of COVID-19, it was critical to keep the program going." No one was popping in to help, and there was no team of volunteers coming in and out to help the kittens.

"I literally had kittens being dropped off at my house at midnight almost every night," Friedman tells nj.com "It was the hardest work I ever had to do because I was by myself."

Now, not only was their operation in their homes successful and they are able to keep helping the kittens, their nursery is expanding, so much so that they had to move the make-shift nursery out of their homes and into a bigger location - "three times the size - complete with 28 cages and multiple rooms to provide separate spaces for healthy, sick, and critical kittens."

The problem is that, even with more space, the nursery can't take in many more new kittens since they do not have the volunteer support that they need. "We can't run this program without volunteers," explained Friedman. So, now, they are looking for volunteers, and we hope that if you are in the area and are able to help, you would lend a helping hand to this wonderful operation and help them help these incredible kittens.

Read about some of the rescued kittens and their stories below! And if you're in need of more positive, happy-ending rescue stories, read about this feisty little owl that got its wings singed off in a fire

Thank goodness for good people. When a stray cat showed up at Steinbach Fire Department in Manitoba, Canada, the firefighters quickly noticed the cat shivering outside in the snow, peeping through their window.

The officers opened their doors and began to shower the cat with warmth, care, and love. The stray was able to receive immunization shots and was spayed. The firefighters posted on social media, asking around if someone was missing this lovely little lady, but when no one came forth to claim her, they decided to take care of her themselves and have given her a fitting name - Ember.

Ember is often featured on the station's social media page as "Ember Alerts." But alas, the fire department wanted more for Ember and now Ember has a forever loving home. We wish every stray cat a happy ending.

Wholesome Tumblr Story Of A Cat Who Doesn't Meow

When Tumblr user, sailorcuba, shared their thoughts on how adorable a cat's meow is to any verbal response, it paved the way for another user to share a funny and wholesome story of a cat who had never had human interaction before.

We've heard that adult cats don't actually meow at other cats to communicate, but rather just at humans to let us know when they want something. This story could be further proof of that claim.

Tumblr is filled with endless cat gems, we hope to never discover them all because that would just take out the excitement for when we do across a gem such as this thread below.

Parrot Saves Owner's From Fire By Calling Owner's Name

We always tell you guys about stories of people saving animals, but sometimes, it's the animals who save us. This time, we're not even talking metaphorically about pets who save us by just being in our lives. No, in this case, a parrot literally saved its owner from a huge housefire. The fire was so bad, the entire house was burnt down, but thanks to Eric - the rescuer parrot - the owner is okay.

A starving cougar cub, weighing just 34 pounds, which is 50 pounds underweight for a cat its size, happened to wander to the right place at the exact right time. The cub managed to find it's way to Central Valley Animal Rescue in Quilcene, Washington, and is currently at a rehabilitation center in Texas.

Sara Penhallegon, an animal rescuer at Central Valley Animal Rescue, told King 5 that she suspected the cougar had come to lay in an old pile of hay to die. The cub was barely a year old. Thankfully, the cub wandered to the animal rescue where Penhallegon and her team were able to properly care for this cub. They suspect that the cougar's mother recently passed before she was able to teach her cub how to hunt and how to fend for itself.

Cub tend to stay with their mothers for 18 to 36 months. Without the cub's mother, there was a 10% chance the cub would survive.

"This was a cat that had not learned to hunt yet. It had no way to take care of itself or feed itself," Penhallegon tells King 5. "When its mom died, that would've been a death sentence for this cat unless it found itself a rehabilitation center it could check itself into!"

Penhallegon and her team nursed the cub back to health and the cub was able to put on 10 pounds. After treating the cub for 2 weeks, the young cougar destroyed the hard plastic siding of her pen, her keepers knew it was time for her to be transferred. Because the cougar had no idea how to fend for itself, it couldn't be released back to the forests of the Olympic Peninsula, and it is also illegal to rehabilitate and return a cougar into the wild in the state of Washington.

They decided the young cub would head to a natural habitat zoo in Texas. Penhallegon said she wishes for the young cougar to walk free once again, but as of right now,  she's simply happy it wandered into her life and she was able to save its life.

"Obviously, our goal is to return animals to the wild, but the next best option is a really good captive placement with a great facility that can take care of its needs. And that's what we have for this one," added Penhallegon.

Rare Yellow Turtle That Looks Like Melted Cheese Spikes Twitter Interest

Turtles are adorable. And they come in many different colors and sizes, anywhere from the enormous leatherback sea turtle to the smallest turtle in the world that is only 3 inches long. They are also stunning, coming in many, many different colors. One of the rarest (and funniest-looking) turtles out there is the bright yellow turtle, and it just went viral on twitter

This turtle has only ever been spotted twice, the second time just a few days ago, and the internet is having a world of fun with it. As reported by cnet, according to a wildlife biologist, "the rare yellow color of the turtle may be due to the lack of a pigment called tyrosine present in high amounts in reptiles. A genetic mutation or possible congenital disorder is likely responsible for the lack of tyrosine."

Regardless of the reason though, we're glad that the little guy was rescued, and the internet sure is having fun with this yellow turtle, comparing it to cheese, to egg yolks, to moon pie cookies, to Mario Cart characters and more. Check out some of the most fun comparisons below!
