Gli, Famous Hagia Sophia Cat, Has Passed Away

Gli, a 16-year-old celebrity cat, has sadly passed away.

In 2004, a Turkish European shorthair cat with crossed-eyes was born in Hagia Sophia, Istanbul. Gli had seen become a known figure around Hagia Sophia, and an internet celebrity by grabbing the attention of visiting tourists.

Istanbul Governor Ali Yerlikaya announced on his social media account that Gli was being treated in a private veterinary clinic since September 24th. Unfortunately, Gli had recently passed due to old age. Hagia Sophia is in mourning and remembering the amazing life of Gli, the cat who seemingly touched all those who were fortunate enough to meet or see Gli.

"We will never forget you, Gli," Yerlikaya wrote on Saturday. Gli, the world-famous feline is now part of the iconic mosque's history forever.

Rest in peace, Gli. We will be missed. See more images and tributes to Gli on Instagram

RikiTikiEvi says Nymeria, as a youngling with her littermates. She lived to a ripe old age, was a wonderful little Squee, loved to lick fingers, and if you said, "Nose boops!" she'd stand up to let you boop her teensy nose. :)

erinrussell21 says She posed herself in my craft photo booth shortly after we brought her home from the shelter. She passed away from liver failure on my birthday, last Friday. We will miss her demanding fresh water with ice in it every day.

Elizadeath says: "This is our dog Loki, who was close to 16-years-old. We had to euthanize her today; her systems were shutting down from old age, so she went peacefully to the Rainbow Bridge. My husband is a vet tech, so we were able to give her the shot at home, in her favorite spot in the bedroom, and she died gracefully in our arms. She was an amazing dog; she was a role model for our younger dog, she protected her home and her family, and she was best friends with one of our cats. She will be dearly missed, and it would mean so much to see her on Daily Squee, so the world can know what an amazing friend we have loved and lost."

I'm very sorry for your loss and hope Loki rests in peace. Wonderful dogs like her are what make the world squee!
