This New Book Tells The Incredible Feline Friendship Tales in Old New York

"The Cat Men of Gotham" is a pawsome new book written by Peggy Gavan and provides a historical glimpse into the lives of stray cats living in harsh New York City at the turn of the century. The nineteenth century was a rough time to be a stray cat in New York City. The city's human residents dealt with feline overpopulation by gassing unwanted cats or tossing them in rivers. But a few lucky strays were found by a group of cat men including firemen, cops, athletes, and politicians, who rescued them from the streets and welcomed them into their homes and hearts.

The book is divided into nine sections: seafaring cats, police cats, fire cats, artist/editorial cats, hospitality cats, theatrical cats, civil servant cats, good-luck cats, and lucky cats. Each section provides a collection of short stories, each from different time periods. Gavan artistically balances both factual evidence and heart-warming details to create a book full of engrossing tales of feline-human relations.

Here are some of the heartwarming photos and stories from this new book.

Known affectionately as "bodega cats," many felines live in the small shops, and can often be found lounging on groceries or scuttling across the shelves. Most Brooklyn residents are fond of the shop cats, and some—like illustrator Sunny Eckerle—even celebrate them.

New Law In NY Allows Pets To Be Buried Next To Their Humans in Cemeteries

While humans could always choose to be buried in a pet cemetery next to their beloved pet, the other way around, until now, was not permissible. But the state of New York has come with a groundbreaking new law that truly recognizes just how deep the pet/owner bond can go: furry friends can now be buried alongside their owners across the state. A Newborn Squirrel Was Found In An Apartment in NY

A couple from the Bronx in New York City have spent over $10,000 on a squirrel that they rescued and then adopted.

It all started when two baby squirrels were found on a pile of leaves and twigs on a homeowner's bed in a tenth floor apartment. Christina Reyes, who has been rehabbing squirrels since 2008, rushed in to help the two babies. Sadly, one of them past away due to fever not long afterwards, but the other one was adopted by Christina, who named her Thumbelina. Her husband Michael helped Christina nurse the baby squirrel.

Luigi Maestro is a five-year-old Shih-Tzu who loves treats, attention, and cruising down the streets of New York in one of his four luxury cars. Luigi has a Bentley, a Porche, a Ferrari, and a Beemer. And no, these aren't his mom's cars – these cars are his size, remote controlled, and have a trunks that hold his food and water bowls so he can take a break while he's out on the town. Doting dog mom Anisha Lakhani follows behind at a comfortable distance – close enough to keep an eye on him, far enough that she's not cramping his style! People who see him driving past are quick to pull out their phones and snap a picture. Wouldn't you? Can you imagine a cuter guy in a cooler car?! Via: Iheartdogs
