Baboon Intelligence: How Smart Are They Really

Baboons have been evaluated in numerous studies and shown to have the approximate intelligence levels of a 3-year-old child! According to research, baboons can play with objects, learn words and even seem to mourn the deaths of their friends. There are five species of baboons, commonly known as hamadryas, guinea, olive, yellow, and chacma baboon. Each of these five unique species is native to one of five areas of Africa.

Did you know that baboons have vocal ways of communicating with one another? Baboons can talk!…(Sort of). They have at least 10 different vocalizations they use to communicate. Now that is pretty impressive. Baboons are very terrestrial animals, they sleep in tries or on high cliffs or rocks at night to keep away from predators. They are omnivores and enjoy a diverse diet of plants, seeds, insects, fish, birds, among other things. We love learning about underappreciated animals! Baboons are pretty awesome, AND smart.

From the Associated Press:

A baboon at an Israeli petting zoo has adopted a tiny kitten that recently strayed into its cage. Video released by the zoo shows the baboon caring for the kitten, stroking it and checking its fur for fleas as it would care for its own infant.
