Well that was quick.

Team GB had five athletes medal in three events in just five minutes. Things got started by Tim Baillie and Etienne Scott winning gold in canoe slalom, followed by teammates David Florence and Richard Hounslow taking silver in the same event.

Mere minutes later, Peter Wilson took gold in double trap shooting, followed by Gemma Gibbons' silver in judo a half hour after that.

In the thirty minute period of Team GB making it rain medals, they jumped from eleventh in the medal count to fifth.

On a day where Team USA won a score of medals, China kept pace and remains the overall leader based on golds.

After a quick start, Italy has been dropped out of the top five. Don't worry Italians, you'll always have scenic countrysides, the Trevi Fountain, and Nobel Prize Winner in Physics Enrico Fermi.

Olympic host Great Britain won their first medal today, as cyclist Lizzie Armitstead took silver in the women's road race. After the race she had this to say:

"It's the most special thing I have ever experienced, it was absolutely amazing. I didn't even feel my legs, it was just so special."

Either Armitstead is in desperate need of serious medical attention or she's excited about that whole "OH HEY I WON A MEDAL" thing. The safe money is on the latter.

As the day's festivities come to a close, it's time we tallied up the accolades! The Chinese and U.S. totals are fairly predictable, but Italy? Sure why not. And even if there haven't been enough events for this to be relevant, this is that rare part of the Olympics where the Italians can celebrate having more gold medals than anyone who isn't China. Forza Italia!

While everyone was focused on Ryan Lochte's victory in the men's 400m IM, Chinese swimmer Ye Shiwen broke the women's world record by a full second, finishing in 4:28.43.

China has just 26 medals in swimming events in their history (comparatively the U.S. has 489), but now they can thumb their nose at everyone because they have the gold medal that matters. They currently lead the total medal count for this Olympiad, with Italy (WHAT?) in second.
